TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days. On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

Acts 16:11–15

DEVOTIONAL

by Elder Chris Beltran

Lydia was a worshiper of God but, like Cornelius in Acts 10, had yet to hear the gospel. God rerouted Paul and his friends and ensured Lydia’s location was perfect for them to meet. Then, she listened to the good news of Jesus, and God opened her heart to receive the life-giving message.

This story is full of divine interventions. We see the sovereignty of God. We also see the immediate bond that a new believer has with other believers in Christ. Lydia showed hospitality to those who brought the good news, and she wouldn’t take “no” for an answer.

When God closes the door, remember that all He wants is the very best for us. Let’s ask ourselves, in our walk with the Lord, have we fully surrendered all our ambitions, plans, and control over our lives so that the Holy Spirit is free to guide, lead, and direct us according to God’s plan and purpose? Are we giving generously to the Lord and supporting His workers? Look at how the Macedonians gave, they were in the midst of severe trials, but their extreme poverty did not hinder them from giving generously from their hearts filled with overflowing joy. Only a truly transformed heart will be able to do what they did. They did not give a one-time gift, but they continuously supported Paul throughout his ministry. God is simply amazing!

PRAYER

Loving God, thanks for reminding us of Your guiding hand in unexpected ways. Like Paul and Lydia, lead us to divine appointments. Open our hearts to Your word, empower us to share Your message boldly, and soften the hearts of those we meet. Thank You for Your guidance and grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
