TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.

DEVOTIONAL

by Elder Chris Beltran

Apollos undoubtedly had the talent, intelligence, knowledge, and perhaps eloquence. Still, he would not be able to go further if he didn’t possess humility that even though he was so gifted and learned, he was willing to be mentored, learn, and admit that what he knew was incomplete and may be faulty. If Priscilla and Aquilla were selfish and critical people, they would have called out Apollos publicly as he spoke because of his inadequacy or perhaps criticized him by gossiping around. They would not even have reached out and mentored him. Had Apollos been proud, he would react negatively to someone who dared to suggest that what he knew and taught was incomplete.

Learning is a lifetime process. Great people never stop learning, and for us to keep learning, we must remain humble and teachable.

Both parties were humble in the Lord. One taught without criticizing, while the other learned in submission. And because of it, many fruits were harvested for the Kingdom of God. As a side note, because Pricilla and Aquilla were lifelong learners of the Scriptures, they could discern what was wrong with Apollos’ teaching. However, it was accurate; it was lacking and incomplete. This wisdom and discernment can only be achieved if we continue to walk intimately with the Lord through His word, prayers, worship, obedience, and service.
