TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 6:9–10

DEVOTIONAL

by Erika Hanne Yap

We write emails for work. We use a professional tone in writing and save emojis, abbreviations, and side chats for personal messages. However, recently I was taught to unlearn most of what I knew in email writing. It surprised me when my boss started her email with, “How are you? I hope your family is getting better 😀.”

I thought I knew how to write, but my boss had to check my emails and revise my letters. They said I needed to make it more kind, personal, and human. I struggled to a point where they would end up writing drafts for me since I could not get it right. I did not understand why responding to every email with the same level of care was essential, even if it was just as simple as noted.

My boss explains, “In our work, we deal with humans. They have feelings, experiences, joys, and pains. We do not know what they are going through, but the moment they read our response is the only moment we interact with them. We have to make it count.”

In Galatians 6:9–10, we have a responsibility to be kind to one another. This responsibility does not discriminate against race, gender, or beliefs. Just as the Lord showed his mercy to us, we extend this to others. No one will ever want to refuse kindness, and the world does not have enough of it.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, as we deal with fellow human beings, remind us that they carry feelings, experiences, and emotions. We may not know their struggles, but help us take each opportunity to show care and compassion. May we embrace the responsibility to be kind to one another, irrespective of our differences in race, gender, or beliefs. Just as You have shown us mercy, may we extend that mercy to others. Kindness is a precious gift, and the world is in need of more of it. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
