TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Genesis 29:1-15
When Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, Jacob went up and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.
Genesis 29:10
DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
I have a friend whose usual greeting whenever I call would ask, “How may I help you?” It was such a kind gesture, but it did not end there. I would see her busily helping during events, not mindful of whether she had eaten or not but making sure everything was in order. She told me that her dad taught them to be sensitive to the needs of others, even in small matters. Whenever they see an opportunity to help, they should not wait to be prompted but should eagerly extend assistance. I learned from her Proverbs 3:27, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.”
Jacob had traveled from Beersheba to Haran. His father has charged him to find a wife among his mother’s kinsmen at Haran. Stopping to sleep at Luz, he used a rock for a pillow. There, he had a vision of God, who assured him of His presence and the fulfillment of His promises.
Upon arriving at a well in Haran, Jacob wonders why there are three flocks of sheep waiting there. He said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered. Water the sheep, and go, pasture them.” He found out that they could not move the rock covering the well. When he sees Rachel, he does a kindness similar to what his mother had done when Abraham sent his servant to look for a wife in Haran for Isaac. (See Genesis 24). With super strength, Jacob moves the rock from the mouth of the well and waters the flock of Laban, his mother’s brother. Kindness must be a trait that runs in his family. He found an opportunity to help, and without hesitation, he seized the opportunity.
REFLECTION
How sensitive are you to sense if someone could use a helping hand? How quick are you to help those in need?
PRAYER
Dear heavenly Father, You are our ever-present help in times of need. May our eyes be open for the opportunity to be a blessing to those we meet. May we be able to extend your loving-kindness wherever we go, in Jesus’ name, amen.
