Joseph answered the king, “I am not able to explain the meaning of dreams, but God will do this for the king.”

Genesis 41:16

DEVOTIONAL

by Sandra Chua

The two men answered, “We both had dreams last night, but no one can explain their meaning to us.” Joseph said to them, “God is the only One who can explain the meaning of dreams. Tell me your dreams.” Genesis 40:8 NCV

When my father passed away, I was so distraught. It was the first death in the family. For the longest time, my father was a source of strength, security, and comfort for us. In the following months, I continually had dreams of my father. He would be in good health, and I, aware in my dream state that he had passed away already, would seize the opportunity to embrace him. This happened several times, and I am so thankful to the Lord, who not only interprets dreams but is the one who sends them, that he has sent these comforting dreams to me.

Joseph knew who could interpret dreams. It was not him but God. He acknowledged that both before the chief baker and cupbearer and now to Pharaoh. I remember Job 33:15, which states that He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. Indeed, God is in control even of our dreams.

In today’s reading, God revealed the future to Pharaoh through dreams. On the way to Haran, in Genesis 28:12, God encouraged and comforted Joseph’s father, Jacob, at the onset of his journey to find a wife at Haran. Around thirteen years ago, God also revealed to Joseph what would be happening to him in the future. God used dreams to talk to people in the Bible, and whatever meaning they have also comes from the Lord alone. These days, though God still has control of our dreams, everything we need to know about the future is in the Bible. I do believe he can still use dreams to comfort, guide, and warn us, though, because He is still the same God as Joseph’s God.

REFLECTION

How has God comforted, warned, and guided you through your dreams?

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father,  You control all things. In my waking and sleeping hours, You are the God who sees me. May You always grant us a good night’s rest. May we correctly handle the dreams that You give us, in Jesus’ name, amen.
