TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so…

DEVOTIONAL

by Stephanie Reloj

Unlike modern weddings that typically last a day or a few hours, ancient Jewish weddings were extended festivities that could span several days, sometimes up to a week! Given the length of the celebration, running out of wine would have been a significant social embarrassment for the bridegroom and his family. In that cultural context, providing guests with abundant food and drink was a sign of hospitality and honor. To run out of wine prematurely could have disgraced the host and tarnished the festivities. So, the miraculous act of Jesus turning the water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana rescued the celebration. However, it also revealed Jesus’ divine power and authority.

Jesus, initially hesitant to perform a miracle, chooses to honor His mother’s request and steps out in power to transform ordinary water into the finest wine. In this miraculous act, Jesus demonstrates His authority over creation, affirming His identity as the Son of God.

This reminds us of Jesus’ role as the Creator, as affirmed in Colossians 1:16. Through Him, all things were made, and His ability to transform water into wine serves as a powerful testament to His divine nature and authority.

The quality of the wine astounds the master of the feast, highlighting the miraculous nature of Jesus’ act. The wine typically takes time to age and develop its flavor, yet Jesus produces wine of exceptional quality instantaneously, showcasing His ability to exceed human expectations and accomplish the impossible.

As we reflect on this miracle, we are reminded of Jesus’ power to transform our lives. Just as He turned water into wine, He can bring about transformation and renewal in our hearts and circumstances. He can turn our ordinary experiences into extraordinary displays of His grace and glory.
