TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” 33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.” 34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:
“I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”
Matthew 13:31–46
DEVOTIONAL
by Stephanie Reloj
Imagine the scene: a mustard seed, tiny and seemingly insignificant, yet when planted, it grows into a large tree, providing shelter for birds of the air. Likewise, a woman kneads leaven into the dough, and through the unseen work of the yeast, the entire batch rises.
In these parables, Jesus reveals a truth that transcends time and culture: the kingdom of God may start small, but its growth is exponential and unstoppable. The kingdom of God began with Jesus Himself, who called twelve ordinary men to follow Him. From this small group emerged a movement that would change the course of history. As they journeyed with Jesus, they witnessed miracles, heard His teachings, and experienced His love. Then, empowered by the Holy Spirit, they carried forth the message of the kingdom, spreading it across lands and seas.
Think about the apostle Paul, once a persecutor of Christians, who transformed into a passionate preacher of the gospel. His letters traveled far and wide, reaching cities and nations with the good news of salvation through Christ. Through his ministry, countless lives were transformed, and the kingdom continued to expand.
Today, we stand as heirs to this legacy of faith. Just as the mustard seed grew into a tree and the leaven permeated the dough, we are called to be agents of growth in God’s kingdom. Our task is to share the gospel, sow seeds of truth, and be vessels of God’s love and grace in a world hungry for hope.
REFLECTION
May we be like the mustard seed, willing to be planted in the soil of God’s purposes and trusting Him to bring forth fruit in His time. May we be like the leaven, allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us and transform lives and communities from within.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of being part of Your kingdom work. Help us to sow seeds of Your truth faithfully and trust in Your power to bring about growth and transformation. Use us, Lord, as instruments of Your grace so that Your kingdom may continue to expand and Your name be glorified. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
