TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Colossians 1:15–23
“And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” Colossians 1:18–20

Imagine a symphony orchestra with each musician playing their part perfectly under the guidance of a skilled conductor. The conductor ensures harmony, timing, and unity, bringing out the best in each musician to create a beautiful masterpiece. Similarly, Christ, as the head of the church, orchestrates the life and mission of His body, the church, ensuring unity, purpose, and growth. In Colossians 1:15–23, Paul highlights the supremacy of Christ not only over creation but also over the new creation—the church.
Paul declares, “He is the head of the body, the church” (Colossians 1:18). Just as a head directs and controls the body, Christ directs and guides His church. The church, as His body, finds its life, direction, and purpose in Him. As members of Christ’s body, we are called to submit to His leadership. Recognizing Him as the head means yielding to His authority and guidance in our lives and within the church.
Moreover, Christ is “the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead” (Colossians 1:18). His resurrection marks the inauguration of the new creation. By rising from the dead, Jesus defeated death and made a way for us to share in His resurrection life. Being part of the new creation in Christ means embracing our identity as members of His body. We are called to live but our faith in unity and purpose, reflecting the life and love of Christ to the world.
Paul emphasizes that Christ has supremacy in everything. This includes His preeminence over creation and His authority over the church. His supremacy ensures that He is central to all aspects of our faith and life. As believers, we are called to proclaim the supremacy of Christ in all things. Our lives should testify to His lordship and the transformative power of His resurrection.
“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things… by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:19–20). Christ’s sacrifice on the cross brought reconciliation between God and humanity. His blood shed on the cross made peace possible, restoring our broken relationship with God. This brings us peace with God. Whenever we feel overwhelmed by sin or guilt, we can find comfort and assurance in the reconciliation He has provided.
REFLECTION
In what ways can you submit more fully to Christ’s leadership in your personal and church life? As we reflect on Paul’s exaltation of Christ in Colossians, let us remember that Jesus is not only the head of creation but also the head of the church. His leadership and sacrifice guide us into a life of peace, unity, and purpose. May we live in a way that honors Him and reflects His supremacy in all things.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we acknowledge You as the head of the church and the supreme authority over all creation. Help us to submit to Your leadership and embrace our identity as members of Your body. Thank You for Your sacrifice on the cross, which brings us peace and reconciliation with God. Empower us to live out our faith with unity and purpose, proclaiming Your supremacy in all we do. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
