TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Ezekiel 1:1–28
“…Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
Ezekiel 1:28b
DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
Do you love science fiction movies? I am amazed by the imagination of sci-fi authors. Many old sci-fi movies, however, have become a reality. To name a few, there are robots, automated houses, GPS, and outer space travel.
Today’s reading is like a scene from a sci-fi movie. But unlike sci-fi fiction which may not all become a reality, this one is amazingly true. I believe we, as children of God, will behold all these one day.
In the midst of blinding brightness like gleaming metal, fire flashing forth continually, Ezekiel described the appearance of the four living creatures with four wings and four faces, each with their legs straight and soles like calf’s feet. Sparkling like burnished bronze, they had human heads under their wings. He described the position of the creatures with respect to each other. Their wings touched one another. He described their movement. Each one going straight forward, without turning, darting to and fro, like flashes of lightning. Besides, the creatures were 4 wheels like gleaming beryl, moving in the same way as the creatures without turning. I would imagine the robot cleaners’ wheels which move in all directions but in three dimensions. The rims of all four wheels were full of eyes, probably like several CCTV in our time.
I had to read the passage today multiple times to visualize Ezekiel’s first vision. I checked the rendition of the vision of some artists on the internet to see which one comes closest to what Ezekiel described.
The best part of the passage is in verses 26–28, where Ezekiel describes the best he could the glory of God.
The vision amazed me, and though I do not fully understand all that it meant, I knew God created these beings. He is master over them, and His glory supersedes the four creatures. One cannot help but have the same reaction as Ezekiel after seeing all these. After reading it, one just had to pray and worship.
REFLECTION
How does imagining the glory of God bring excitement, gladness, and a heart of worship to me?
PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, You are a great and awesome God. One thing I desire, that I may dwell in Your house all the days of my life, to gaze upon Your majesty and worship You for eternity. When I am anxious and scramble to fill my thoughts with everything good and everything noble, let images of Your glory and recollections of Your powerful miracles delight me. O Lord, my God, You alone are worthy to be praised. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen.
