TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
1 Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. 3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. 5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
Psalm 127
DEVOTIONAL
by Jennifer A. Sun
Aside from the blessings in one’s daily life, Solomon further writes about the blessings in the family. A home is not only built with bricks and wood, but a home is made of the people in it. He emphasized that children are a blessing from God. Children are not burdens but God’s favor. God grants families children because He wants them to see His grace and provision. Children are rewards from the Lord.
Children were likened to arrows in the warrior’s hand. They need to be guided and aimed to go in the right direction. There is a blessing in having many children. Just like a warrior with his quiver filled with arrows, families with many children are called blessed. Because the children of the godly will have a strong influence in the community, godly children will naturally protect their parents and their families.
Today’s psalm is a reminder to us that God’s blessing is upon our daily lives and our families. For those working diligently, we are to press on and always keep in mind that God is the One who sustains and provides. For the parents who are tired or weary with many challenges in raising kids and taking care of their families, may this be an encouragement to you that the Lord sees you and your families. May we all rely on His grace and providence moment by moment.
PRAYER
