TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

Luke 1:46–55

DEVOTIONAL

by Erika Hanne Yap

We are living in vastly uncertain times. The speed by which the world changes is faster than we ever imagined. We have learned to adapt and thrive. How can we be thankful for such miserable circumstances without knowing what will happen tomorrow?

I left my job at the start of the pandemic. I had no plans and no means of income which made me afraid. I would only cry at night and ask the Lord, “Why?” Despite my unfaithfulness, He is faithful. He had allowed me to start my own business and help my family. If I had not left, I would not have been able to help my family sail safely across turbulent waters. If I had not left, I would not have joined a company whose impact was beyond what I could ever hope to dream of. If I had not left and felt all uncertainty, I would not have seen the certainty of God’s grace.

Mary had all the right to be angry and upset. She had just learned of the news that she was to conceive and about to be married. Her plans of living a peaceful life with Joseph may have been shattered. How would she survive the ridicule of the world? Nonetheless, at that moment, she uttered a song of gratitude to the Lord for her circumstances.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, in these uncertain times, we draw inspiration from Mary’s song of gratitude, praising You despite life’s unpredictability. Guide us to unexpected blessings and grace, helping us find certainty in Your love. In our changing world, help us see Your unwavering grace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
