TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Please read Genesis 9:1-13

I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Genesis 9:13

DEVOTIONAL

by Sandra Chua

I am always delighted to see a rainbow in the sky. Driving northbound through Commonwealth Avenue once, I saw not one but two rainbows! What a beautiful sight!

The floodwaters have dried up. Noah stepped out into a renewed world, and the Lord was hopeful.

God blessed Noah and his sons and commanded them as with Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” God reiterates man’s dominion over the animals both on land and sea. Man shall not only reign over them, but fear of man will be in them. For food, God gave additional items on Noah’s menu, such as animals. There was only one limitation for the new dish: man cannot eat it with its lifeblood still in it. To these blessings, God added a new commandment as well to protect man from himself. God said in verse 5, “Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast, I will require it. And from every man, from every man’s brother, I will require the life of man.”

After purging the earth from evil, the Lord established a new covenant with Noah and all the living things that came out of the ark. The Lord promised He would never inundate the earth ever again to destroy all life. He set a rainbow as a sign of His promise. Like all His promises, they are faithful and true. They are reliable and sure. Maybe that is why rainbows are so beautiful. They reflect the character of our God.

REFLECTION

How do you view God’s promises? Which promises in the Bible are your favorite? What rainbows has God given you after a storm in your life? How have you held on to these when the clouds of trouble come looming?

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, You are the faithful God. No matter how many promises You have made, You are sure to fulfill them all. Therefore, we collect as many promises as we can in the Bible, keeping them as treasures of Hope. We build our lives upon them, knowing we will not be dismayed, in Jesus’ name, amen.
