TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Genesis 11
The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
Genesis 11:6
DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
What is wrong with fame? A name that will be remembered long after we are gone on the earth? Was God selfish that He wanted honor only for Himself? 1 Peter 5:5 says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Proverbs 16:25 says, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. “
Were the people proud? Probably. Were their motives for building the tower rooted in a haughty spirit? God knows.
There is a lesson here aside from pride that I believe we can use for good. Take note of verses 6 to 7. When people communicate and understand each other, they stand united. Without proper communication and with a language barrier, things are bound to fail.
To develop and maintain good relationships, good communication is important. Whether personal, as in a marriage, between friends, or between parent and child, or in a corporate setting, as in employer-employee or between colleagues, we need to understand each other. Each party must convey their requirements and expectations properly. Each party also, through the same medium, must express correction, approval, or appreciation.
In our spiritual life, good communication is in the form of reading our Bibles, listening to God’s words, prayer, and quiet time. We need to know what God requires of us, not what we think he requires of us. We need to pray not only for supplication but as a form of worship.
REFLECTION
How is your communication with God? Do you take time to read and listen to what God wants to say? How often do you lift up your praise, concerns, and thanksgiving to the Lord?
PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us a way to relate to You. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us through the Bible. Thank You for always hearing us when we pray. Please open our schedules to have time for You each day, in Jesus’ name, amen.
