Please read Genesis 12:1-7
And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing.

DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
I designed a checkbook a few years ago. It was a special checkbook meant to be given to people whom you pray for. The bank is not of this world. It is called the Bank of God’s Promises. The check number, when translated into letters, would read “Saved-By-Grace.” The payee would be the person you are praying for. The amount would be the verse you will be claiming for the person, and the signatory would be you, the person who will be praying. The first few pages have a log to take down your prayer promises and a space to jot down when the prayer was answered. The design was built upon the fact that God’s promises are sure. You can take it to the bank.
Today’s passage centers on God’s promises to Abram. God commanded Abram to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s house. Where to? To a land which God will show him. God didn’t give him maps, no Google photos for a quick preview, and no specific directions.
God gave him six promises. First, he will become a great nation. Second, God will bless him. Third, God will make his name great; Fourth, Abram will become a blessing. Fifth, God will bless those who bless Abram, and the one who curses Abram, God will curse. Sixth, all the families of the earth will be blessed through Abram.
With those promises, Abram packed his bags, took his wife and Lot, his nephew, and all their possessions which they had accumulated, and the persons which they had acquired in Haran, they set out for the land of Canaan.
What made Abram so quick to follow God’s Command? Abram must have trusted in God. He obeyed by faith. In that, Abram was right. God’s promises are sure. He is trustworthy. Fast Forward to Joshua 21:45, which says that not one of the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; each one was fulfilled.
God’s promises are sure. We just need to claim them.
REFLECTION
What promises has God given you? How quick are you to believe them? How do his promises inspire you to obedience?
PRAYER
Dear heavenly Father, You are unchanging and reliable. You are faithful to fulfill all Your promises. Your promises give me hope because I am sure You will keep them, in Jesus’ name, amen.
