TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Please read Genesis 13:1-13

So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land before you?

Genesis 13:8-‬9a

DEVOTIONAL

by Sandra Chua

Food always tastes better when my husband and  I order food to share. In restaurants, it is our family tradition to order food for sharing so that you get to try more dishes. Whether we order a few or many, usually there is always enough. There’s no need to fight for your share.

Abram and Lot were so rich that the land where they settled was not big enough for the both of them. Quarrels between the herdsmen arose. Abram was quick to address the matter. He knew he could not ignore the conflict between the herdsmen. He knew it might escalate into bigger trouble and cause even him and his nephew to have misunderstandings. He exhorted Lot that as brothers, there should not be contentions between them. He offered Lot the first choice of the land. The whole land was before them. It was big and spacious. There is enough land, but they just have to move farther away from each other.

Two things in this passage impress me. First, Abraham’s desire for harmony. He valued relationships. He has taken Lot as his own after Lot’s father had passed away. He wanted to preserve the good relationship. Economic strife was not worth risking their relationship.

Second, Abram’s faith in God’s promises. God had promised blessings to Abram. He trusted God would be able to deliver that with whatever land Lot left him with.

God’s blessings are exceedingly abundant. Like the manna in the desert,  those who gathered little had enough. Your father knows what you need even before you ask Him. There is enough for everybody.

REFLECTION

How has God always provided what we need? How do we value the relationships God has given us? Knowing God is all-powerful, loving, and generous, how can we trust Him to provide for us?

PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, You are all-powerful and all-knowing. Our everlasting Father, You know what we need before we ask. We set our hopes on You from whom every good and perfect gift comes. You richly provide us with everything to enjoy. May we never feel the need to fight for what is ours because it is Yours to give. We know that as a generous God that will not withhold from us good things, in Jesus’ name, amen.
