TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
James 1:19-21
DEVOTIONAL
by Dr. Nehemiah K. Sia
Patience is a virtue. When we know how to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry, we overcome our pride and put away all filthiness and pervasive unrighteousness. We receive with humility and meekness the Word of God, which is able to save our souls. When we listen carefully to a person and do not judge quickly, we give the person the benefit of the doubt. Because our anger does not produce righteousness, therefore we need to show patience towards each other and grant God’s grace that was given to us.
At times, we easily say things that hurt people because these kinds of words were never thought carefully and were given without care. These words put others down and lift us up. These words judge people but don’t understand them; an example of these are daily conversations and comments on social media. The person being put down is far better than us in many aspects, especially in attitude and talent! In contrast to all our unfair and hurtful words, we have the Word of God that can save and heal our souls!
The Word of God is powerful, and it definitely gives life and encouragement to our broken souls. We need the Word of God because it produces righteousness in us. The Word of God gives us time to think and reflect on the truth and to transform our realities into a better world in which our words bring life, and we respond appropriately in every circumstance with thanksgiving and patience.
Indeed, patience is a virtue, and may we show grace and truth to people around us.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, help me be patient towards others by being quick to listen, slow to talk, and not easily angered. Help me to put away all the dirty things that come to my mind and to be able to receive Your Word with humility and all righteousness. Save my soul, Lord! In Your name, I pray, Amen.
