TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Please read Genesis 28:1-5, 10-17

Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.

Genesis 28:15

DEVOTIONAL

by Sandra Chua

My eldest was three years old, playing on a four-foot-high slide. My husband was there guiding her up, then standing guard to catch her on the way down, over and over again. We look back in amusement at our overprotectiveness.

Jacob was sent to  Haran until the anger of his brother Esau subsided. He was sent there in the pretense of finding a wife. He was sent alone to a land he did not know. Obediently, he set out on a journey, packing in his heart the blessing from God, as pronounced by his father, Jacob, the blessings of posterity and prosperity.

On his way to Haran, where his mother’s relatives live, as he rested for the night, he had a dream from the Lord. There was a ladder going up to the heavens, and there were angels going up and down. God declared a very comforting and encouraging promise to be with him not only through his journey but also to make sure he comes back to the land and fulfills all His promises.

God was with Jacob like a loving father. As Christians, God is also with us. He journeys with us every day. He bears our burdens every day. He will never leave us or forsake us. He stands guard to catch us when we fall. He makes sure no one will snatch us away. Best of all, He will make sure that one day, we will be with Him forever.

REFLECTION

How is God’s promise to Jacob true for you as well? What hope do you look forward to that makes you persevere? How does His promise provide courage for your everyday walk? How does knowing He will do all that He promised give you peace of mind?

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, my Help comes from You, maker of the heavens and the earth. My strength comes from knowing You will always be there beside me. My hope comes from trusting Your unchanging character and bountiful grace. Help me to always see You in my daily life. I look forward to seeing Your complete work in me, in Jesus’ name, amen.
