TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Genesis 32:1-12
Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord, who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,’ For You said, ‘I will surely prosper you and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.’”
Genesis 32:9-12
DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
I received a favor booklet on my birthday from my daughters. Written on each page were special things I could claim upon presentation of the coupon. It included chores that they do not normally do. I kept it as a treasured gift but did not take to heart what was written. One time, I wanted a special favor and remembered I had unclaimed coupons. I reminded them about their birthday gift , and they obligingly let me claim my special favor.
God had commanded Jacob to return to his country and promised to prosper him. Upon returning, he is gripped with fear after he is informed that Esau is coming to meet him with 400 men. Jacob quickly prayed and reminded God that It was Him who asked him to return with the promise to prosper him. He knew he did not deserve anything from God, but He relied on God’s faithfulness to do what He promised. He admitted fear and asked for deliverance from Him, who was able to deliver.
God has given us many promises in the Bible. Whenever I am afraid, I pray back His promises until my heart is at peace. To claim His promises, of course, you have to know what they are. According to the Unshakeable Hope Series by Max Lucado, there are 7,846 promises in the Bible. Wow! It’s like having 7,846 birthday coupons! The great thing about it is that it is reusable and it has no expiry! You do need to know God’s word to claim it, though. So, let’s dig into our Bibles and find those treasures!
REFLECTION
What promises of God are your favorite to claim? How has God responded when you pray them back to Him? How has knowing them helped you?
PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, no matter how many promises you have made, You are faithful to fulfill them all. Thank you that your words will never pass away and that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. We know we can always rely on You, in Jesus’ name, amen.
