TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Genesis 35:1-7
And let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.
Genesis 35:3
DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
Do you have a favorite dating place with your special one? It is probably a place where you first met or a place that is conducive to talking or just sitting quietly together.
God first appeared to Jacob in Bethel twenty years ago. God promised to bring him back to the land of his father. (Gen 28:15) Now, God appears to him again upon his return to his home. God confirms his promises. God commands him to build an altar at Bethel and live there before building the altar. He prepares to purify his household. It is a wonder that after twenty years of walking with the Lord, he had to clean up his household of foreign gods. That probably included the gods that Rachel hid under her saddle. Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him again, just as God had commanded.
I was once asked, “What is your favorite part of your house?” I answered, “It is the blue sofa where I read the Bible every day.” When I asked my husband the same, he also answered with his favorite Bible reading nook.
We do not have personal altars anymore, but it is good to designate a special place, a part of your house, to meet with the Lord for a date every day. Make it a place where you will be undisturbed. Read his words, pray, worship, and listen. You can even just sit still. Psalms 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Enjoy your time. You will not regret it.
REFLECTION
How often do we go to God in prayer and worship to read His words and sit in silence to listen for God to speak to us? Remember his faithfulness and how He has answered your prayers.
PRAYER
Dear heavenly Father, You first loved us while we were yet sinners. I know that it is You I can rely on in times of distress. Thank you for always being with us. Please guard our schedules so that we may always spend time with You, in Jesus’ name, amen.
