TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Please read Exodus 2:23-25

So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Exodus 2:24

DEVOTIONAL

by Sandra Chua

When my daughter joined a bazaar, we had to carry many bags to the venue, one of which was a big piece of luggage. Going in was easy because my husband was there to help. Come egress, my husband got sick, and we had to do the carrying by ourselves. We were particularly worried about how to carry the big luggage we brought. There was a flight of stairs to the parking lot. When we got to the stairs with the big luggage, God quickly sent help. There was a lady guard who offered assistance. Halfway down the stairs, I told the girl that if she could do it, maybe I could too. She quickly replied, “Mam, I’ll do it. You might fall down the stairs.” I thank God for sending help even when we don’t say things verbally.

The Israelites groaned because of the heavy work given to them by the Egyptians. The Bible didn’t say they prayed for relief, but still, God heard even their groaning. Verse 24 says, “God remembered His covenant with Abraham.” It was time.

God is a compassionate God. When He sees us suffering, His heart is moved. In  the time of the judges, when the Ammonites were oppressing Israel, Judges 10:16 says, “So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord; and He could bear the misery of Israel no longer.” When Isaiah prophesied regarding Israel’s coming deliverance from their enemies, he showed us God’s heart in Isaiah 63:9: “In all their distress, he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy, he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.”

God loves His children very much. Though we are commanded to lift everything to God in prayer, it is heartwarming to know that there are times when we do not even have to say anything. He is there.

REFLECTION

How has the Lord sent help even when we have not asked?

PRAYER

Our heavenly Father, You are omniscient. You perceive our thoughts from afar. You know our needs before we ask You. Even though we are mere mortals, here today and gone tomorrow, You understand the groaning of our hearts. Thank You for being our Jehovah Shammah. You are with us. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
