TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Exodus 10:21-29
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
John 8:12
DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
In an airplane, when lights are turned down so that the passengers can go to sleep, there are tiny spotlights that you can use so that you can continue to read or do something in your seat. The spotlight is quite concentrated, so it’s bright enough for one person but not glaring for others seated beside them.
When Egypt was cast in thick darkness, they could have chosen to have light by obeying the Lord. But they chose to disobey; hence, for three days, they could not see one another, so no one rose from his place. Meanwhile, the Israelites had light as usual. It is hard to imagine that situation in this modern age because we have flashlights, candles, cell phones, and emergency lights.
The darkness here in Exodus is physical darkness. The world now, though modern and well-lighted at night, is similarly plagued, not with physical darkness but with spiritual darkness. For the world continues to reject Christ, so like the Egyptians, it gropes in darkness. 1 John 3:19 states, “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”
As Christians, we have the light of the world, which is Christ. In John 12:46, Jesus Christ says, “I have come into the world as a light so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 8:12 states, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” As God’s children, like Israel, we live in God’s light. His words are like light for us. It shows us where to go, what to do, and how to decide on matters according to God’s will. Psalms 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
God is gracious. He continues to hold out his hand even to those who refuse to acknowledge Him, showing his power again and again so that they will know He is Lord and that the world might turn from sin and choose Him. Let us continue to pray for His kingdom to come and His will to be done so that the world that God so loves may not have to stay in darkness but will have the light of life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
REFLECTION
Are you in the light? How are you using that light in your daily life?
PRAYER
Dear heavenly Father, You created light when there was nothing at all. You rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of Your Son. Thank You for sending light into this dark world. This we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
