TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Exodus 13:1-10
Take out all the old yeast so that you will be a new batch of dough without yeast, which you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. So let us celebrate this feast, but not with the bread that has the old yeast—the yeast of sin and wickedness. Let us celebrate this feast with the bread that has no yeast—the bread of goodness and truth.
1 Corinthians 5:7-8

So what is this mysterious yeast that the Lord forbids to even be inside the houses of the Israelites during the seven days of the Passover?
Yeast is a leavening agent or, simply put, a raising agent used in bread dough. It causes a foaming action (gas bubbles) that lightens and softens the mixture, thus making bread light and fluffy. A small amount makes a small lump of dough double or even triple in volume due to the air bubbles formed. Yeast is actually fungi. You can have your own DIY yeast by simply letting a mixture of flour and water sit together until it ferments because yeast and bacterial spores naturally occur in flour.
What is so bad about it? Yeast is symbolic of sin in the Bible. Just as yeast is not visible in flour because it is microscopic in size, yet mixed with water, it grows and affects the whole dough. Sin, though not obvious, sin, even small ones, can snowball into something big and affect many people around it.
1 Corinthians 5:7-8 (NCV) states, “Take out all the old yeast so that you will be a new batch of dough without yeast, which you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. So let us celebrate this feast, but not with the bread that has the old yeast—the yeast of sin and wickedness. Let us celebrate this feast with the bread that has no yeast—the bread of goodness and truth.”
With the sacrifice of the Passover lamb before and now made complete by Christ, we were made righteous in the eyes of God. So we are to turn away from sin, get rid of it like how the Israelites got rid of yeast, and live as new creations in Christ.
PRAYER
Dear Lord, may we recognize the importance of Christ’s sacrifice in cleansing us from sin and empowering us to live lives of righteousness and truth. Grant us the strength to continually turn away from sin and embrace the new life You have given us through Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
