TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Please read Judges 18:1-10

“Two are better than one… though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9a, 12a

DEVOTIONAL

by Sandra Chua

I used to love watching National Geographic videos about animals in the wild. What I learned was how the predators would single out target prey that were separated from the flock, herd, or pack. The predators knew that if the animals were alone and had nobody to help them, they would have a bigger chance to have dinner.

The men of Laish were secluded. They lived alone with no relationships or alliances with the people around them. EASY (Bible version) puts verse 7b this way, “and there were no other people who would help them.” Therefore, they would be easy to subdue.

As Christians, we, too, cannot be lone rangers. God designed man to be a social being. From the time of Adam, God made Eve a suitable helper for man. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 put it perfectly. It says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

That is why we go to church; that is why we have fellowships and ACCESS groups. These days, we have what is called “accountability partners”, someone to help check our walk with God: someone to pray with us and for us, encourage us when things get rough, and rebuke us when we do wrong. It could be a friend, your spouse, or your Access group mate. So, if you are not yet part of an Access group in Jubilee, go find one group to join. We have group meetings almost every day of the week.

REFLECTION

How have I thought that I am strong enough to tread the Christian walk alone?

PRAYER

Dear Lord Jesus, You are our Friend, our strength and wisdom in times of need. You have not left us as orphans. Aside from the Holy Spirit, who gives us comfort, encouragement, and wisdom, You generously and graciously provide us brothers and sisters in Christ to help us because You know that we are visual and social beings. Thank You for equipping us with everything for life and godliness, in Jesus’ name, amen.
