TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
Please read Psalm 101:1–3
I will set no worthless thing before my eyes.
Psalm 101:3a
DEVOTIONAL
by Sandra Chua
Waiting for my husband and daughter at a mall, I saw a man in his 60s seated alone, happily looking and occasionally chuckling at his phone. I felt bad looking at him because I saw myself in him. There’s an addiction that grips most of us. The internet calls it “scrolling”. We hold our phones and scroll down endlessly, looking for amusing memes or videos.
Reading the Psalm today, I tried to ignore verse 3, but it kept leaping up for attention. I knew some things had to be addressed. It might sound trivial, but I do waste a lot of time with the excuse of trying to “relax.”
God does not want us to be workaholics laboring 24/7, 7 days a week. In fact, He instituted the Sabbath for our benefit so that we may have rest. But in this modern high-tech world, we are faced with things that may masquerade as relaxation. It could be games, shopping, TV series, social media, and the like. We label them as recreation or entertainment to de-stress our packed schedules. But when left unchecked, it can easily become a distraction or clutter, something that takes up more time and priority than it really should. Let us be on guard regarding these things lest they become something that enslaves.
May He give us the will and determination like the Psalmist not to set our eyes on worthless
REFLECTION
What worthless things do you set before your eyes? What things have mastered us? Would you ask the Lord to teach you to number your days so that you may grow in wisdom? Would you ask Him to set you free so that you may utilize His gift of time?
PRAYER
Dear heavenly Father, thank You for giving us not only work but rest as well. Forbid that our recreation becomes addictions. You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we live. We are not going a minute longer. Therefore, teach us to number our days so that we may have a heart of wisdom. We pray for all these in Jesus’ name, amen.
