TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

John 2:11–12

DEVOTIONAL

by Stephanie Reloj

The pandemic led families to be cooped up together under one roof 24/7. For some, they got to bond and enjoy each other’s company. While some families got to know each other but ended up irritating one another. If the second situation happened to you, how would you navigate your family situation?

Amidst the miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana, we catch a glimpse of Jesus’ familial relationships and responsibilities. As the eldest son of Mary and Joseph, Jesus carried a special responsibility to care for His family, particularly His mother, Mary.

Despite the absence of Joseph, Jesus fulfills His familial duty with compassion and devotion. His concern for His mother is evident when Mary approaches Him with the concern of the wine running out at the wedding feast. Though initially hesitant, Jesus honors His mother’s request and performs His first public miracle, signifying His care and provision for His family.

This reminds us of the importance of family relationships and responsibilities. Amid His ministry, Jesus never neglects His duty to care for His mother and siblings. He models for us the significance of honoring and caring for our families, even amidst the demands of our daily lives and ministry.

As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate His example by prioritizing our family relationships and responsibilities. Whether it’s caring for aging parents, supporting siblings, or nurturing our own families, we are called to love and serve our families with the same compassion and devotion that Jesus demonstrated. There will be times when it’s challenging, but let’s continue to press on. Our family is our first ministry.

REFLECTION

How can we prioritize our family responsibilities in our lives, following the example of Jesus? In what ways can we demonstrate love and care for our families amidst the busyness of life and ministry?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Jesus, who demonstrated love and care for His family amidst His earthly ministry. Help us to prioritize our family relationships and responsibilities, following His example of compassion and devotion. Give us wisdom and grace to navigate the complexities of family life, and may our actions reflect Your love and grace to those closest to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
