TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Matthew 6:24
DEVOTIONAL
by Stephanie Reloj
I am not that sentimental. I had already thrown away the gifts given to me by my friends when I turned eighteen. I regifted some items given to me by my loved ones that will be more useful for others. When people ask me, “Do you want to have this?” I can easily say, “No, thank you,” because, in my mind, I would rather have a few things I really need than hoard stuff and just let them gather dust. I want to stay true and keep what I really use because I will probably just neglect the others.
Our hearts, Jesus tells us, are only big enough to hold one ultimate treasure. We will either live for the things of this world or for the God who created all things.
It’s a sobering reminder that our affections and allegiances are not neutral. We are constantly faced with choices about where we invest our time, energy, and resources. Will we prioritize the pursuit of wealth, possessions, and worldly success? Or will we prioritize seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness first (Matthew 6:33)?
Jesus makes it clear that we cannot love both God and money. If our hearts are set on earthly treasures, there is no room for God’s kingdom to reign supreme in our lives. Conversely, if our hearts are captivated by the beauty and majesty of God, the allure of worldly wealth will pale in comparison.
REFLECTION
Take inventory of your heart. What is the primary treasure that occupies its affections? Are you more focused on accumulating wealth and possessions, or are you passionately pursuing a deeper relationship with God and His kingdom? Consider how your daily choices reflect your true priorities.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times when we have allowed the pursuit of worldly treasures to overshadow our love for You. Help us set our hearts on things above and seek Your kingdom and righteousness first. May our lives be a testimony to Your glory as we wholeheartedly serve You as our one true Master. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
