TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24–27
DEVOTIONAL
by Stephanie Reloj
In Matthew 7, Jesus illustrates the importance of a firm foundation for our faith with a parable about two builders. One builder wisely constructs his house on the rock, while the other foolishly builds his house on the sand. The rock in this parable represents Jesus Christ, our firm foundation.
Building our lives upon Jesus means placing our trust and obedience in Him alone. It’s not merely about saying the right words or performing outwardly religious acts; it’s about genuinely trusting Jesus with our entire lives.
Sadly, I know a lot of people who started strong in the Lord. They gave up their weekends for ministry opportunities, were passionate about sharing the gospel, and even studied God’s word in every way possible. But where are they now? They stumbled and have forgotten about their faith.
When the storms of life come—as they inevitably will—those who have built their lives upon the rock of Christ will stand firm. Their faith will sustain them through trials and tribulations, for they are rooted in the unshakable truth of God’s promises.
On the other hand, those who have built their lives upon the shifting sands of worldly pursuits and empty religion will find their foundation crumbling beneath them when the storms rage. Without a solid foundation in Christ, they are vulnerable to the destructive forces of life’s trials.
REFLECTION
Thinking about how I might be like the man who built his house in the sand is daunting. It is only by God’s grace that I continue despite life’s challenges. So, let us reflect on the foundation of our faith. Let us continue to cling to God. Let’s evaluate ourselves. Are we building our life upon the rock of Jesus Christ, or are we relying on unstable and temporary sources of security? How can we ensure that our faith is firmly rooted in Christ, especially when facing the storms of life? What practical steps can you take to deepen your relationship with Him and strengthen your foundation of faith? How can we press on?
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for the firm foundation we have in Jesus Christ. Help us to build our lives upon Him alone, trusting in His promises and obeying His word. In times that we are failing, help us, Father, to stand once again. May our faith withstand the storms of life, and may we bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
