TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

Please read Mark 9:2-13

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

DEVOTIONAL

by Stephanie Reloj

Imagine you have a friend who always seems ordinary. One day, you see them walking with two world-renowned leaders—people everyone respects and admires. Suddenly, your friend’s status elevates in your eyes. It’s not just about the company they keep but about what it reveals about their significance and connections.

In Mark 9:2-13, we find a moment where Jesus reveals His divine glory to three of His closest disciples: Peter, James, and John. This passage describes the Transfiguration, an event that vividly showcases Jesus’ divine nature and foreshadows His resurrection glory. Luke adds that as Jesus prayed, His face changed, and His clothes became dazzling white, radiating in glorious splendor (Luke 9:29).

This moment on the mountain is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it demonstrates that Jesus, though fully human, was also fully divine. His transformation reveals that He could manifest His glorious power at any moment. This confirms that Jesus’ journey to the cross was not one of defeat but of willing submission. He chose to lay down His life, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 53:7, where He is described as a lamb led to the slaughter, silent and willing.

Secondly, the appearance of Elijah and Moses with Jesus is deeply symbolic. Moses represents the Law, and Elijah represents the Prophets. Their presence with Jesus signifies that He is the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets. The disciples’ immediate recognition of Elijah and Moses, despite never having seen them before, suggests a divine revelation given to them, emphasizing the importance of this moment.

For Peter, James, and John, witnessing the Transfiguration was a glimpse into the true identity of Jesus. It strengthened their faith and prepared them for the trials to come. For us, this passage serves as a reminder of Jesus’ ultimate authority and glory. It reassures us that the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus were part of a divine plan, executed with power and purpose.

REFLECTION

Let us remember that Jesus’ glory was not just a momentary display but an eternal truth. He is the radiant Son of God who chose the path of the cross out of love for us. Let this truth fill us with awe and gratitude and inspire us to live in a way that honors His sacrifice and reflects His glory.

PRAYER

Father God, help us see the glory of Christ more clearly so we can live in the light of His love and sacrifice. Help us remember that just as Jesus revealed His glory to His disciples on the mountain, we can also desire to see Your glory in our lives. May this encounter become so powerful that it fuels us to love others and obey Your will in our lives, in Jesus’ name, amen.
