About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone\u2019s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, \u201cDon\u2019t harm yourself! We are all here!\u201d The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, \u201cSirs, what must I do to be saved?\u201d They replied, \u201cBelieve in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved\u2014you and your household.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A violent earthquake shook the prison, and all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose! The jailer woke up and initially thought every prisoner had escaped. Rather than facing humiliation and capital punishment from Roman law, he decided to take his life. Just then, “…Paul shouted, ‘Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!'” (v. 28). Trembling before Paul and Silas, the jailer asked, “‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’\u00a0 That night, the jailer and all his household believed and were baptized. He washed their wounds, brought Paul and Silas to his house, set a meal before them, and he was filled with joy that he and his family had come to believe in God.<\/span><\/p>\n

The question, “What must I do to be saved?” is the question that all of us should be asking if we are truly concerned about where we will be spending eternity. How did Paul answer? Doing good works, treating people kindly, praying a set of prayers several times, attending church, giving to the poor, believing in different religions, just to be sure? The only answer is to “believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you and your household will be saved.” Trust in Him today, and we will be like the jailer and be filled with joy when they have come to believe in God through Jesus Christ alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gracious God, Your word shows us the power of praising You in adversity. Teach us to trust Your plan, even in challenges. May our faith be a witness to others, and may those captive find freedom in You. Thank You for Your transformative presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.<\/span><\/p>\n
